Skilled Worker Visa 2026: What Has Changed and What You Need to Know

· 2 min read

The Skilled Worker Visa landscape in 2026

The Skilled Worker Visa has undergone significant changes since 2024. The general salary threshold has risen, occupation code lists have been updated, and the rules around tradeable points have shifted. If you are planning to apply — or if your employer is about to sponsor you — this guide explains what has changed and what it means in practice.

Salary thresholds: the headline change

The general salary threshold for new Skilled Worker applicants has increased to £38,700 per year. This replaced the previous £26,200 threshold and represents the biggest single shift in the route’s requirements. There are still exceptions — new entrants, shortage occupation roles, and certain health and education roles may qualify at lower thresholds — but the bar has risen substantially for most applicants.

What happened to the Shortage Occupation List?

The old Shortage Occupation List (SOL) has been replaced by the Immigration Salary List (ISL). While some roles remain on the list, others have been removed. Crucially, roles on the ISL still benefit from a reduced salary threshold, but the discount is smaller than before. If your role was previously on the SOL, check whether it still appears on the ISL — do not assume it does.

Certificate of Sponsorship: common errors

The most frequent reason for Skilled Worker refusals remains errors on the Certificate of Sponsorship. Incorrect job titles, mismatched SOC codes, salary figures that do not align with the going rate — these are all avoidable mistakes. At Guide Bridge, we review every CoS before submission to catch issues that could delay or derail your application.

English language requirement

The English requirement remains at CEFR B1 for most applicants. Accepted evidence includes a Secure English Language Test (SELT), a degree taught or researched in English, or nationality of a majority English-speaking country. If you passed a SELT for a previous application, check the expiry date — some tests are only valid for two years.
