British Citizenship: How Long Does Naturalisation Take?
The path to a British passport
Becoming a British citizen through naturalisation is the final step in your UK immigration journey. It gives you the right to a UK passport, the right to vote, and permanent security. But the process has strict requirements and the timeline can feel long if you are not prepared.
Eligibility timeline
Most applicants must have held Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) for at least 12 months before applying. If you are married to or in a civil partnership with a British citizen, the residence requirement is 3 years; otherwise, it is 5 years. The clock starts from the date you first arrived in the UK on a qualifying visa, not the date of your ILR grant.
Absence limits
During the qualifying period, you must not have been outside the UK for more than 450 days (5-year route) or 270 days (3-year route). In the final 12 months before application, you must not have been absent for more than 90 days. These limits are strict and the Home Office checks them carefully.
Processing time
The current standard processing time for naturalisation applications is approximately 6 months. There is no priority service available for citizenship applications. After approval, you will be invited to attend a citizenship ceremony (usually within a few weeks), where you take the Oath of Allegiance and receive your certificate of naturalisation.
After the ceremony
Once you have your certificate of naturalisation, you can apply for a British passport. First-time adult passport applications are currently processed within 10 weeks. You are British from the date of your ceremony — you do not need to wait for the passport to exercise your rights.
Preparing now saves time later
The best thing you can do is prepare early. Keep a log of your travel dates, save flight bookings and entry stamps, and make sure your Life in the UK certificate is safe. Guide Bridge can run an eligibility check well before your application date so you know exactly when you qualify and what to have ready.
