What Is the Life in the UK Test? Everything You Need to Know
Why you need the Life in the UK test
The Life in the UK test is a mandatory requirement for most Indefinite Leave to Remain and British Citizenship applications. It tests your knowledge of British values, history, traditions, and everyday life. Passing the test proves you have a basic understanding of British society — a requirement the Home Office takes seriously.
What the test covers
The test is based on the official handbook, Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents. Topics include the values and principles of the UK, British history from the medieval period to the modern day, government and politics, the legal system, the role of the monarchy, British culture and traditions, and practical aspects of everyday life.
Test format
The test consists of 24 multiple-choice questions. You have 45 minutes to complete it. You need to answer at least 18 questions correctly (75%) to pass. The test is taken on a computer at a registered test centre. You must book and pay (currently £50) in advance.
How to prepare
Read the official handbook thoroughly — it is the only source material for the test. There are many unofficial practice tests available online; use these to test yourself, but always cross-reference answers against the handbook. Focus on dates, numbers, and specific facts (such as which countries make up the UK, the voting age, and when women gained the right to vote).
On the day
Bring your valid passport or biometric residence permit — without acceptable photo ID, you will not be allowed to sit the test. Arrive early. Phones and personal items are stored before you enter the testing room. Results are given immediately after the test. If you pass, you receive a notification that you can download your pass certificate.
If you do not pass
You can retake the test as many times as you need. There is a minimum 7-day wait between attempts. Each retake costs the full £50 fee. Most people who fail on the first attempt pass on the second with better preparation. Guide Bridge can advise on study strategy if you are finding the test difficult.
