ILR Application: A Step-by-Step Guide to Settlement in the UK

· 2 min read

What is Indefinite Leave to Remain?

Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) grants you permanent residence in the UK. There is no time limit on your stay, you can work without restrictions, and you become eligible for British Citizenship after holding ILR for 12 months. It is the most important step in your UK immigration journey after your initial visa.

Step 1: Check your qualifying period

Most routes require five years of continuous lawful residence. Your qualifying period depends on which visa you hold — Skilled Worker, Spouse, Long Residence (10 years), or another route. Check that your visa history covers the full qualifying period without gaps.

Step 2: Calculate your absences

You must not have been absent from the UK for more than 180 days in any rolling 12-month period during your qualifying period. This is one of the most common reasons for ILR refusals. Calculate your absences carefully — do not guess. Entry and exit stamps, travel records, and airline bookings all help build an accurate picture.

Step 3: Life in the UK test

You must pass the Life in the UK test before applying. The test covers British values, history, traditions, and everyday life. It costs £50 and is taken at a registered test centre. Book well in advance as centres fill up. You need to pass only once — keep your certificate safe.

Step 4: English language evidence

ILR requires English at CEFR B1 level (intermediate). Accepted evidence includes a SELT at B1 or above, a degree taught or researched in English (with NARIC confirmation if the degree is from outside the UK), or citizenship of a majority English-speaking country.

Step 5: Prepare your application

Gather your current and previous passports or travel documents, biometric residence permits, P60s or tax returns for each year of residence, bank statements, payslips, your Life in the UK test certificate, and your English language evidence. Guide Bridge compiles these into an indexed evidence pack with a covering letter that addresses each eligibility requirement.

Step 6: Submit and attend biometrics

ILR applications are submitted online. You will need to book a biometrics appointment at a UKVCAS centre. Standard processing is around 6 months; a same-day decision service is available at premium centres for an additional fee.
